There is an external antenna that folds out from the back of the monitor that does improve range a little bit when extended. We needed a new standalone monitor after our older one broke because the little ones ripped off the antenna! If you want the best of the best with a variety of baby-centric features or movement monitoring, we love the WiFi Nanit Pro that scored well overall and provides some of the best videos around that you can watch anywhere with internet access. Based on recommendations from friends, I knew I wanted to get a video monitor that didn't use Wi-Fi because the thought of one getting hacked made me extremely uncomfortable. The DXR-8 PRO also makes an awful noise when the display is out of range or when the camera is off and the screen is still on.

The monitor's built-in speakers are very tinny, but they're more than sufficient for listening for important sounds like crying. I tested this one with my family as well and found it has a very small screen in comparison to the Infant Optics DXR-8. The Infant Optics DXR-8 video baby monitor is a non-WiFi baby monitor that boasts an LCD display, plus remote pan, tilt, and zoom options. In summary, the Infant Optics is a simple to use video baby monitor solution that performs well in all measurable categories. For one, I wish it displayed the time on its screen so that I don’t also have to check my phone whenever I hear a peep in the middle of the night. It’s obvious to us at Fathercraft that the DXR-8 is long past its prime, still coasting on an out-of-date reputation, supported by a serious lack of awareness about just how good the new best baby monitors perform. Performance of the DXR-8 is marginal at best, and just plain non-functional when the out of signal range issue surfaces out of nowhere. Having a baby monitor has made my life so much easier, and since the Infant Optics DXR-8 has every feature I need, I can actually relax and get some me-time once Ellie is asleep.

The screen quality is day and night, the noise reduction is a game changer, and the set-up is way easier. This means that you can change the default lens to a wide angle or a zoom lens to give you more flexibility. But it also means the camera is safe from hacker interference—and it's not dependent on a connection to work.

Operating on a closed-loop system, our baby monitors provide you with a secure and private connection that only you can hear and see. This is a great upgrade to the Infant Optics DXR-8, but it still doesn’t outshine some of the better monitors like the Eufy Spaceview and most of the wifi/connected monitors. Unscrew the hood to twist on the included 2x optical zoom lens—handy if you're monitoring across a big room. You will need to plug it at night to recharge while you sleep however as the battery takes about 7 hours of charging to be full.
