They've given us a window into their escapades in the hit Netflix show, Travels With My Father, and in this brilliantly funny book they've pooled their advice for fellow travellers. In this particular case, listening to Jack, Michael and Hilary, take turns telling stories and commentating on each other’s memories and advice, was well worth the audible credit. Now don’t get me wrong - I love the Whitehalls, especially Hillary, who I love and adore - but I just didn’t take to this autobiographical book, which really disappoints me. Whether you've watched the show or not, this book is just as funny and paints a terrific picture of the pros and pitfalls of travelling with your parents, or other close family members.

Choose the three most important things that you want for your visit, be firm about your plan to do them and then let the rest go. Unexpected expenses during a cost-of-living crisis can make it hard to feel present, and the expectation to “enjoy this time” is overwhelming. You have just volunteered to spend a week in close proximity with the people who know you best and who will never ever let you forget a f***-up.Before you leave, it can be helpful to have a conversation with all holidaymakers about what you all expect going into this: how much money are you willing to spend?

I recommend keeping a copy of this book to hand to dip into every time you dive into the treacherous waters of travelling with relatives. Using conflict resolution tactics like speaking in “I feel x” (not “I feel like x) statements and taking time out when the conversation is going around in circles can take some pressure off family dynamics. Not only did he make me laugh out loud I must say the conclusion really made me love this book all the more and made you realise how much you could be missing. Whatever your version of holiday preparation the truth is always this: if it is with one’s own family, no amount of sunshine, wine or holiday spirit will stop your worst character traits coming to the surface.

We offer a range of ways to speak with a trained relationship expert including ongoing counselling, 30 minute web and phone chats, and one session therapy. If there is a bully in your family who keeps after you, simply say, “I hope that you can be happy for me, even though I haven’t followed the path you would have taken. Let’s just say…not every topic needed to be that long and, though I’m sure it was rather fun for the family, I did not particularly care much for all the additives of Michael and Hillary. Bring your own pillow and ear plugs, or download a white noise app and make sure you get a room farthest from any snorers.Alert your guests to standing appointments that you will attend, such as your choir practice, so they can plan accordingly. Although it's not the type of book I normally read, it was enjoyable and definitely worth five stars!
