This, perhaps, is the key to Shadow Kingdom, and a decent artistic reason – the commercial expediencies being self-evident – why Dylan has chosen to release the show as an album now. In addition to Dylan, who plays guitar and harmonica and sings, most of the song arrangements consist of two additional guitars, a bass and an accordion. The Daily Telegraph 's Neil McCormick gave the album a five out of five star rating and wrote: "What an absolute joy it is, in which the grand old man of songcraft flips through his own back pages with genuine relish, a man in his 80’s revisiting the words of his firebrand youth and finding entirely new meanings there". Drawn from a 2021 live stream with Dylan revisiting his past through the prism of his current sound. Pledging My Time is the most ethereal of blues, a rendering of tradition that seems to be broadcast from the spirit plane.

Writing in Uncut, Richard Williams rated the album four out of five stars, arguing that its sound seemingly grew out of Dylan's previous album Rough and Rowdy Ways. Shadow Kingdom presents Dylan performing revelatory 21st century versions of songs from his storied back catalogue – including fan favourites like “Forever Young” and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” and deep catalogue gems like “Queen Jane Approximately” and “Wicked Messenger. The film features Dylan and a group of masked musicians performing 13 songs from the first half of Dylan's career in an intimate club-like setting.

As well as appearing on More greatest hits, it was a rare and unfairly overlooked single, with Spanish is the loving tongue on the B side. So a look back through the years bringing a relaxing reinterpretation of his past that is not better than the originals just different and for Dylan fans well worth a listen. The album's cover photograph is a black-and-white still image of Bob Dylan playing the harmonica taken from the film Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs of Bob Dylan, directed by Alma Har'el and shot by Lol Crawley.

This means that the sound is close to Tex-Mex with its use of acoustic guitars and an accordion to add colour it is a very gentle sound and Dylan's voice is relaxing presence. The performance of " Forever Young" from Har'el's film was released as a standalone video on June 2, 2023. Shadow Kingdom nonetheless earned rave reviews from critics, many of whom praised Dylan's creative re-arrangements of his early songs as well as Har'el's imaginative staging of the performances. Shadow Kingdom the album, then, turns out to be an extremely useful addition to the Dylan catalogue, and very much of a piece with his current manoeuvres.Tombstone Blues, slowed to a spectral recitation, sounds like it was written the same day as Murder Most Foul, but a day that’s hard to place in either 2020 or 1965.
