The story is a web of interlinked elements that are complex enough to tease the brain and yet in Rankin’s hands it’s all so well told that it seems to fit seamlessly together. My wife hasn’t ‘allowed’ me in inverted commas to do any writing except that The Rise had to be written in January/February because I didn’t get round to it last year. The Rise is a luxurious apartment development in West London, within walking distance of Paddington Station. Detective Sergeant Gillian Gish investigates the murder of a concierge which takes place in a lavish 12-story apartment complex, the titular "Rise". Now, however, it seems that a new TV show will be in the works, to be aired either next year or the year after.

The body is that of the night concierge, Dwaine Hogarth, found by his girlfriend who had come to visit in the middle of his shift. But it all comes together brilliantly, as only Rankin can do with his ability to incorporate current events into his books, and with his trademark dark humour. The book in question, A Heart Full of Headstones, took shape in my head in January and I started writing it in February. I’ve been anxious when reading the last few books, wondering how they would end, as this series has been such an important part of my reading life. The National Library of Scotland also hosted a small exhibition highlighting some of my writing archive. Looking back, the clues were all there, and ‘hiding in plain sight’ couldn’t be a more appropriate description of the killer, or killers. The mood is not at all reminiscent of the Rebus novels -24 installments so far and counting- so my suggestion is to dive into the story forgetting Rankin's other works.

The book is well edited which, these days, is by no means a given for a traditionally published book. Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982, and then spent three years writing novels when he was supposed to be working towards a PhD in Scottish Literature. Everyone has something to hide A missing private investigator is found, locked in a car hidden deep in the woods. The Rise releases on November 1, 2023 and is available as an eBook from Kindle Unlimited , or in audiobook format from Audible, narrated by Indira Varma. It's not the first time the legendary detective has taken the law into his own hands, though it might be the last.

However it is a tired, exhausted Rebus, a man who struggles to climb stairs and refuses to get his obviously failing heart checked by a doctor.Through the floor to ceiling wall of windows of the open plan lounge/kitchen we survey the city below, where daytime dog walkers, runners and cyclists move along the paths criss-crossing The Meadows, one of Edinburgh’s parks. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The deceased is the twenty-two-year-old concierge at The Rise, a twelve-story luxury apartment building in London. As the plot unfolds there are several strands going on but as usual Ian Rankin handles this with aplomb. I can’t say I felt much kinship with any of the targets, the author making it difficult to actually like them, but I was caught up in the puzzle. In this occasional series, I’m going to look at some books which I have read and see what I made of the adaptation. bestselling author of A SONG FOR THE DARK TIMES 'It's another Rebus novel you can't put down, and Rankin at his most powerful' CHOICE 'Rankin is superb' DAILY MAIL An illegal immigrant is found murdered in an Edinburgh housing scheme.Rankin’s formidable gifts are on full display as he ratchets up the suspense page by page until the shocking conclusion. His books have been translated into thirty-six languages and have been adapted for radio, the stage and the screen.
