What is less obvious, by design, are the steps many people took to create new lives for themselves once they reached LA from less hospitable places. Even so, I still think it is a fascinating story and would be a good selection for a book club or buddy read because of the potential discussions.

Paul’s debut is a riveting, often heartbreaking tale that explores race, privilege, and celebrity in America through the eyes of a one-of-a-kind character.is a sprawling page-turner set against the backdrop of the Hollywood machine, an insightful and nuanced look at the inheritances of family, race, and gender—and the choices some women make to break free of them. She starts to break after she has her too dark skinned baby who she allows her midwife to adopt so she isn’t outed by her husband.

in " The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter. VERDICT Paul's novel highlights the burden and loss of racism by focusing on the color line and passing. Having said that, this storyline of black women trying to or having to pass as white has been way overdone in the past year or two. In the 1930s and 40s, Hazel is a black single mother raising a white-passing child in segregated North Carolina. Kitty had written out twenty-five invitations to her own memorial service for her lawyer to mail after her death.I think while of course, there are things that happen to Kitty, she makes the choice to go along with it too.

However, the modern portions of the novel, which follow Elise in the wake of Kitty’s death, were a significant drop in quality. Days after Noele’s NYU graduation, Giovanni, the middle daughter, had moved to Toronto to film what became a hit AMC show. This debut novel is about fictional actress Kitty Karr and her rise to fame and her beneficiaries who will uncover Kitty’s secrets. I really liked Kitty as a character and felt for the difficult decisions she had to make due to industry and societal standards. The premise is that actress Kitty Karr (Tate) passes away and wills her fortuned estate to the Black St.Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

It’s just the story, didn’t have what it took to feel like the intention of Kitty’s journey, and how we ended up reading her story, really mattered in the end. An ambitious novel, illuminating the complexities of racial identity, particularly what it means to be Black in Hollywood no matter the era. The tributes were numerous, and her films and decade-long-running television show shot to the top of digital sales.A multigenerational saga that traverses the glamour of old Hollywood and the seductive draw of modern-day showbiz. It was interesting all that Kitty had to go through in her life and to find out how her life intertwined with the other women in this book. John family, the world is baffled as to why the white Hollywood legend left her fortune to three Black women of no relation to her. Black people come in all shades, and racism is still alive and kicking, so what makes you, a non-Black person, think that you would be able to clock someone who’s passing or that passing in general is just “unrealistic”?
