Nicholas Bracegirdle, a.k.a. Chicane, is the British electronic musician, composer, and producer. He is often seen as one of the seminal Trance originators. After booking some successes with his debut album in 1997, he sealed his worldwide success with his sophomore album Behind The Sun, which was originally released in March 2000. The album spawned four singles, “Saltwater”, “Don't Give Up”, “No Ordinary Morning” / “Halcyon”, and “Autumn Tactics”. Both “Saltwater” (feat. Máire Brennan) and “Don't Give Up” were released to commercial success, charting #1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. The latter was a collaboration with best-selling artist Bryan Adams and became a top ten hit on singles charts across Europe and North America. a b Spencer, Neil (2000) "This Week's Essential Releases: Chicane – Behind the Sun", The Observer, 26 March 2000

On 24 May 1999, the album's lead single, " Saltwater", was released to commercial success. The song included a revision of the vocals from Clannad's " Theme from Harry's Game" provided by the original and featured singer, Máire Brennan. [3] The single reached number six on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance Singles Chart. Decided to buy this thinking that I didn't already have it: I did. Never mind, though. It is a good album but in my opinion probably not as good as Chicane's earlier 'must-have' album, Far From the Maddening Crowd. The latter is a classic album and they don't seem to make music like that anymore. Far From the Maddening Crowd is a superb drive album or 'anytime' album that just lets you drift away. The same applies to Behind the Sun as well. If I ever have to leave anywhere in a hurry - to include the planet earth - then Far From the Maddening Crowd is the one album I'd take with me but would quite happily take Behind the Sun if I couldn't find the former album.

If you have bought Behind the Sun first and not Far From the Maddening Crowd, then, basically, you've screwed up. Get both albums. However, it was his working with Bryan Adams on the global number one, Don’t Give Up, with its sexy intro and ear-worm chorus that took Trance from Ibiza to Top of the Pops. Chicane about the album: “Twenty years have gone by and people still talk about this album, so we felt it was time to give it a fresh and modern dusting down. I am beyond excited and pleased with the new interpretations and I hope that those who enjoyed the original get the buzz all over again.” Labelled as being the King of Trance, Chicane had successfully married what we now take as normal; the collaboration and guest vocal. Indeed, taking it a step further and incorporating known, ‘found’ pieces into compositions. Something Brian Eno had started some years earlier. a b "Chicane – Behind the Sun". trancecritic.com. Andromeda isn’t a song that you listen to by itself, but in the context of the album, Andromeda provides an epilogue to the album. Grade: B+ What’s the verdict on Behind the Sun? With that said, I can see an interpretation that does not match my own. While looking at the lyrics, we hear a bit of a mournful tone. Suissa sings about winter, just around the corner, the hiding sun, and the cold darkness that autumn brings. Suissa also sings “summer is my only friend.” Judging by the lyrics, Autumn Tactics was is not a happy song despite my interpretation. But autumn is my favorite season, and Autumn Tactics describes my favorite season well. So, my prejudiced opinion is that Autumn Tactics is the happiest song on the album. Grade: A (though your interpretation may vary). Overlap Overrest serves as a musical rest stop for your emotion. Get out, stretch your legs, and chill out before the album’s finale. Grade: B Don’t Give Up Chicance’s anniversary remix album “Behind The Sun (2020 Anniversary Mixes)” is out on May 08th 2020! No Ordinary Morning’s lyrics are littered with heartbreaking lines. In the coda, the lyric “n the darkness that surrounds me / Now there is no peace of mind / Your careless words undo me / Leave the thought of us behind” leaves us wanting to sob and hug our teddy bears. But mostly, we feel empty. Not lonely, not even sad, just empty. On its own, Don’t Give Up is a good song. Paired with other songs on the album, Don’t give Up is insanely profound. Grade: A Andromeda Halcyon is the weakest song of the album. That’s not to say Halcyon is boring. But at nine minutes, there are times that Halcyon lags, especially a couple of minutes into the song. Oh, but keep listening. At about 7 minutes in, we’re treated to one of the most beautiful melodies on the entire album.
