There’s an elusive yet distinctly joyful quality to Carson Ellis’s picture book that feels like suspended glee, or a laugh caught halfway in the throat. Carson Ellis is the author-illustrator of the celebrated, New York Times bestseller Home , her debut solo picture book, as well as being the illustrator of The Composer Is Dead , written by Lemony Snicket, and Dillweed’s Revenge, written by Florence Parry Heide. Here’s a bright, refined fantasy world to be lost in, and one that has its dark, seasonal drama to boot. The audio-book won the 2019 Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook production from the American Library Association [2] The audiobook was written by Carson Ellis and narrated by Eli and Sebastian D’Amico, Burton, Galen and Laura Fott, Sarah Hart, Bella Higginbotham, Evelyn Hipp and Brian Hull.

The story, told in an invented insect language, is about some bugs who discover a plant shoot emerging from the ground. But even for the novice like me the creative text is understandable and the piece a predominantly visual feast. As in a traditional wordless title, the sequential images have to be examined closely so that we can create our own version of the story. At first they wonder what it is; then, as the plant grows larger, they realise they can climb on it.

I haven't used it with pupils yet but will, we will work it all out together and it will help our decoding skills. Candy Gourlay introduces Wild Song, her companion novel to Bone Talk, in which Luki and Samkad leave their home in the Philippines for America. This book was a total hit with my three year old who loved the made up language and would use the words. The book offers a fabulous bugs' eye view of the world and its wonders with plenty of untold stories to explore. And, honestly, if you think about it, picture books are full of words their audience doesn’t understand at first. There’s a touch of magical realism to Ellis’s story; the cricket plays a violin, damsel flies build a tree house, the ladybird likes to relax in a deckchair and read a book (in her own language we assume.
